I have a 1949 MM UTS, with the stock motor. When I run the motor, the governor wanders and the motor increases speed. If I put a weight on the governor linkage to the Carb, it functions normally. I have tried adjusting the governor and nothing seems to help. Is this governor wore out? What are your suggestions? Thanks.

Scott - Do you have the light spring in place between the throttle arm and the choke lever bracket on the carburetor? (Punch below for photo - the spring is just ahead of the governor to carb linkage).

When I rebuilt and reinstalled the carburetor on my '48 UTU I forgot to reinstall that spring. The governor was erratic and wouldn't idle the motor down all the way. Problem cleared up soon as I put the spring back on.

A MM governor is not supposed to need that spring. Your governor is worn some, needs shorter rod to work properly. Internal parts can't pull the throttle all the way shut any more.

That makes sense Kelvin...

I noticed that at speed the governor responds to load changes much better (less RPM droop) without the spring. However it won't pull the engine to low idle unless the spring is in place. I presume when you say I need a "shorter rod" I can bend the gov to carb link to effectively shorten it?

What's threw me is a buddy of mine has an MM "G" equipped with a nearly identical aux spring setup. I just presumed it was stock. (A check of my "U" parts book tonite however shows no spring...)

Yes, That is what I mean. Bend it slightly to make it shorter and take up the slack in it. This will account for the wear and stretching that the rod has done over time.

Try to shorten the the governor linkage by bending it a little more at the curve. This will help take the slack out and let the carb. will get the feel of the governor.

Tried putting a bit more "kink" into the gov to carburetor rod to shorten it, also removed that extra spring. The governor is now much responsive to changing loads, and it will idle the motor down to dead slow. Thanks guys!!
