UTI overheating

I've had this UTI for about 22 years, it's a 46 with the one piece block & head, whenever I would run it, it would never move the temp gauge until a load was on it. 2 years ago I was shelling corn for a co-worker on a farm he had just bought. During the job the engine would heat up & we'd have to stop & let it cool, then go again for about 10-15 minutes. Ever since, it doesn't want to slow idle either, it wants to surge, it won't stay at one low speed. Now days it also will warm right up even without a load & it don't take too long either. I've kept it full of water all the time, there is none getting down to the oilpan. Where would you guys start to look ? Do I have no more than a stuck thermostat or do I have more wrong somewhere ? I know the radiator could use a boilout & I'm wondering whether to take a look at the water pump. Help me guys, I'd like to get her going again. Thanks..... .Roger

I would start with the thermostat.. Most likely it is the culprit. You could also probably use a tune-up.. points, cap, rotor, plugs and clean out the carb. The surging could be due to dirt being drawn up into the main fuel bleed in the carb. This is the air/fuel bleed nozzel that the main needle jet screws into.

What happens is this. The tractor will starve and start to die.. when it dies, the suction on this falls and the debris in the carb bowl float out or falls out of the nozzle and the tractor picks back up in rpm.. only to repeat this senario over and over on itself.

As for the Thermostat.. its in the upper water neck on the top part of the radiator. While you are at it.. flush your radiator and make sure your fan belt is tight and the fan isnt slipping.

Thanks Phil, I'd like to have had this fixed by the 3rd weekend of Aug. but that isn't going to happen. If I get into it in the next few months, I'll post what I find
