Use 6V Starter w/ 12V GEN Battery

Is their any way I can use a 6V starter on a 12 volt tractor? Would it be fine as long as you don't engage the starter forever? I always thought the 6V starters were built tougher anyways.

Also, does anyone know where to get a starter drive for a UB? I would like to experiment with using one in a 6 volt starter with a 12V tractor nose cone.

I've located 12 volt starters but they go for so much compared to 6V starters. I wanted to experiment a little bit.

Trever - Go ahead and feed your 6 volt starter 12 volts - it'll work fine. I've have a couple on tractors I did 20+ years ago and they are still working fine. Just remember not to crank excessively (more than 30 seconds or so) without letting the starter rest a few minutes to cool.

If the starter is equipped with a solenoid switch (I think all the UB series all are�.), recommend replacing the solenoid with a 12 volt unit. They are cheap - less than $10 - and readily available at any parts store. Ask for a generic (Ford style) solenoid.

Hook up the 6 volt starter with a neg. ground and you will be ok. Make sure the selinoid works.
