Like it sits.. $500 is probably fair.. You'll spend $1,500 to make it look like new.. or at least that much in paint, tires, etc. If you have to get into the engine, that changes things.. but as it sits, $500 is fair. As for a R being worth $10,000.. Hate to burst a bubble, not a chance. MM tractors do not bring the kind of money JD or some of the other brands can or will. I can't say with 100% certainty, that an R wouldn't bring that kind of money restored. I just know from experience. One doesnt restore these old MM tractors to make money. If you are doing it to make a profit on a restoration. Good Luck. I have yet to be able to recoup my money, time and effort invested in a restoration on a sale. Sure.. I have been able to get out what I have put into a tractor.. depending on how much had to be done, but I have never made a profit on my labor. I have $6,000 sunk into a 1948 UTU. It has a brand new radiator, tires, paint, decals, correct muffler, hydraulic cylinder, gauges, seat material, overhauled engine with BRAND new M5 blocks and M&W high compression pistons (last set Lester Wenzel had) New valves, seats, etc. Tractor looks like new. Is it worth $6000? Nope.. it is still a 1948 UTU and therefore only worth $2,000 to $2,500. However, in the end.. a tractor is only worth what someone is willing to pay you for it. It has nothing to do with what someone has in it. Too many times I have seen people let a good tractor just sit in the weeds and rust away rather then sell it for what it is really worth due to sentimental reasons. If you think your R is worth $10,000. then it might be.. but only if someone is willing to pay you that for it. Buy the RTU.. if the guy will sell it for $500. Restore it, play around with it.
