Hi,

I was wondering if any other starter would interchange? I desperately need one bad! I can't find one anywhere.

Also wondering if anyone has any tips to remove paint off of serial number plates on the blocks, t/a housings, hydraulic pumps, and governors. For some reason the tractor is painted the newer paint color, Energy Yellow, and the plates got painted over. I can't seem to find any prarie gold on the tractor for some reason. Also i've got a new style governor, possibly from a M670, on my UB and would like to the number off of it for reference to see what it is from. Whoever did this had to weld on some extensions on the linkage from the throttle to the governor and the governor to the carb due to the different angles. I'm also trying to figure out what kind of carb is on it and what it's off of. Shouldn't their be a TSX ### somewhere on it?

Thanks,
Trever

As far as the tag on the carb, being 52 that is most likely the year, as they were usually stamped with a month and a year. Nice to use as a quick reference to the year, as long as the carb. wasn't changed... May be a left over U carb from the factory.

Thanks Alan!

I never thought of it. I wish it wasn't so pitted. I see the TSX on the top, with the 52 on the right, I don't see anything to the left, and I see a 7 on the bottom probably being a TSX-67 which would make it a 1952 U carb. I think these molines were rather crudely made. How many different types or application differences were there as far as carbs are concerned? I've heard certain ones have a larger inlet hole where the butterfly is. And, did they weld the throttle shafts onto the linkage? Because the carbs I have have a spot of weld right where the shaft would go through the linkage.

Now I have a question about how they painted them. Did they paint the tractors assembled or did they start from the ground up and paint each part as they put it together. My grandpa says they painted them assembled. I pretty much believe him because the gas tanks on the U's are unpainted where they sit over the dash piece. Also, what type of paint and applicator did they use?

Thanks,
Trever

Not sure on the different carbs. I will have to take a look at some. As far as the painting of the tractors, I think they were probably painted all assembled, at least the basic parts of the tractor. Items like the carb, starter, generator, I assume were probably painted separately, but I have seen some carbs, that didn't have much paint on the back side. Sometimes if not most of them had painted fan and generator belts as well as air cleaner hoses. Not sure on the paint and applicator

Thank You Alan!

It's nice to have that clarification. A lot of people now days paint everything disassembled because they sandblast their parts. I was not sure if that was the proper way. I kept on getting told that MM always painted everything assembled, hood on and all.

I bet that carb was original because that carb and manifold came off of a different tractor, which I found out to be a 1952 UTE. So being that 52 was stamped on the carb, it must be the original carb.

If you take some cheap carb cleaner and spray it on the serial number plate the old paint should rub off. Make sure you get cheap Carb cleaner and not throttlebody and air intake cleaner. It may take a few tries but you won't mess it up. The old paint should come off. When you are ready to repaint the tag, spray paint it lightly with black paint. When it dries completely, take some fine steel wool and rub over it. Make sure it is FINE STEEL WOOL and not sandpaper. The letters that are raised will come back out and you may need to take some time to get the little spots but the tag will look brand new when you are done and the numbers will be easy to read. I have done this a few time and my tags look great and are very easy to read. The trick is getting all of the old paint off. Try not to use anything to scrape the paint off. I have found that if you arenot carefull enough, you can really mess things up. Hope I helped and good luck!

Thank you Chris!

I've used some carb cleaner on some other tags, I believe the name is Gumout Carb and Choke Cleaner? It's in a white aerosol can. I have never tried rubbing it before. I've tried sanding, scraping, and wiping but not rubbing. Just with your fingers?

I've never known that the the tags were painted black from factory. I always thought they were the same color as the metal. What are they made out of? The ones on the KT, 21-32 FTA, and M670 are all metal color. Does the tag get fully covered or just a mist?

Looks like i'm getting a bigger list of things to buy in my memo pad. :D

Thanks,
Trever

I am not sure what color the real old tags are. I have an F-20 Farmall and it has a black tag with metal colored letters and numbers. You may have to do some research on that. I have a ZA Moline and the tags are black on it as well. If the gumout carb cleaner will take the paint off, go ahead and use it. I always let it soak for awhile then wipe off the old paint with a rag. It might take a few tries. I think the tags are made of tin but not really sure. I know you have to be careful about using screw drivers as they tend to dig in very easily. When you get ready to pain it, put a light coat or two on it, just enough to cover the metal. I wouldn't suggest brushing it, paint tends to build up fast. When it dries rub it lightly with fine steel wool and it will look good as new. I think the UB should be black, as it was made after my ZA. As for the others I'm not sure but maybe some of the rest of these guys can help you out with that. If you have anymore questions post them up here and maybe we can help out.

Try using a flat edge screwdriver or something flat. Be very gentle and keep it nice and flat. I did this on my starter and generator and got the paint off so I could see the serial numbers. Just be patient.

I tried the paint thinner this morning and it still hasn't done anything. I know put some Bix Stripper on but I don't know if it will work. It might be old because it is pretty thick. We'll have to see in the morning. I found that tag and checked it. All I could get was a TSX on top of the rivet and a 52 right to the right of the rivet.

Thank you both for the tips!

On the starter issue, I do not have a core for it at all. Didn't come with one on when I bought it. I do have a nose for it that works, but can't figure a combination to mount it up to an ordinary U 6 volt starter. I can get one from my local guy that works on starters and generators, but i'm going to pay $250, and I wonder if their is a core charge. Maybe this is the way I should go. After I find acore and pay for it, plus rebuild it, it will probably be the same in the end.

I will try to take some better pictures and post them on here. You have to have an internet host site to post pictures on here right, since you need a URL?

Thanks,
Trever

Trevor - If you've the right starter nose, a good starter shop should be able to build up the rest from salvage/rebuilt parts for a lot less than $250! I believe the frame and guts of those old Delco starters are pretty much standard - many models differ only in direction of rotation, terminal type/location and location of the oiler cups. The other thing you will need is the gear pitch, tooth count and direction of rotation so the correct bendix can be provided.

I've had good luck sharing photos with Epson Photo. It's easy to use and it's FREE!! Punch below for the Epson home page, then hit "sign up now" - it'll walk you through the process from there.

Good luck!

Bob,
Got signed up and everything on Epson. I'm having difficulties with it though. After the screen pops up when your uploading images, and after it goes away after the images are uploaded, the main screen goes to a dead link or it cannot find the server. I haven't been successful yet. Any clue?

Trevor - At the ADD NEW PHOTOS page, when you finished selecting the images you wish to upload, did you hit the "add photos now" button? (It's at the bottom of the screen - you have to scroll down to find it). If you don't hit the "add photos now" button, your pictures won't get uploaded and you end up with blank screens like you describe. (Been there, done that!)

After Epson Photo successfully uploads your images it should take you back to the MY ALBUMS page. From there hit either the "View My Albums" link, then the "in box" link. Or you can simply punch the "Go to my photo inbox" button to look at your uploaded photos. From there you can arrange you pix into albums, etc.

If you still have problems email me offline - I'll help if I can!

Trevor - Try your local alternator shop about your starter. If you have a dead one now, chances are they can repair it for less than the cost of a rebuilt. Also, your alternator shop should be able to cross your Delco starter number to others that will work for your UB.

You might try scraping the paint overcoat off your nameplates with a scrap of hard wood plastic. A piece of Plexiglas ground to the shape of a chisel works well. Often the overcoat will chip/scrape off leaving the original factory black paint underneath intact. Modest application of heat (hair dryer or heat lamp) while scaping may help.

If your UB has a Marvel carb, the nameplate should be a circular brass disk riveted to a boss on at the outer rear of the air horn near the fuel inlet. It'll likely be covered with varnish and dirt and require a good cleaning to be visible. Punch below for a photo of the TSX 67 tag I found on the carb on my UTU.

Trev, aren't those Delco starters like others of that time? Think any starter shop can repair most of it. Only part that might be only MM is the nose into bellhousing. Zat the problem? On the paint on plate, try Lacquer thinner or even just plain paint thinner first, pour some in a pan, set plates in or gently rub if still on tractor. Keep it wet to soak it up, may bubble and soften enough to peel off or scrub gently. It usually comes off w/out bothering the orig paint on tag. Carbs usually have a small metal tag on the screws that hold bowl on, probly gone if it's been messed with much. My 670 has a TSX-90 I think, it that helps.

I checked the tag on the 670 this morning and it shows a TSX-901 or a TSX-902 I think. I'm guessing the carb on the UB is original. I found a TSX-?7 so it is probably a TSX-67, which would be from a U.

Trever----- ----Just go get a can of paint remover frome a paint store and dab a little on the paint you want to remove with an artist brush,q-tip, or pipe cleaner. Paint thinners or solvents won't touch that stuff after it has dried. May have hardner added in it which is going to take a stripper of some kind. If you can find it on sale anyplace try X-Var. I doubt that you will find it as it is an industrial stripper.----deadeye

Thanks. I will be going to town in a day or two, so I will go to Running's Fleet & Farm and see if they have that X-Var. What does it come in as far as size?

Like I had said , it is industrial stripper and comes in a 5 gal can to companies that buy it as they use a lot of it. I think that you can get regular stripper in a quart can that is oblong in design or it may be in plastic now as I have not bought any in quit a few years. You will just have to look and decide. Most of the good ones wash off with water after they have bubbled the paint. Make sure you don't get it on the rest of your paint job if you have a decent one. It will streak or ruin it. I sometimes wipe it off with paper towels instead of using water right away. After most of it is off, then flush it off with water.----deadeye
