Does anyone out there have the original seat post assembly for this tractor? I desperately need a photo or drawing to complete my restoration of a 17-30 type A serial number 5269. also does anyone have a clue to the age of this tractor?

I have a Minneapolis 27-42 and have never seen a serial number list. It is about the same as the Type B only the RPMs were cranked up for more hp. From what I've gathered, the Type A's were built from 1922-1929. I think all of the MTM tractors were numbered together, some of them were probably power units, too. Type A was tested at Nebraska in 1921 serial #2038, Type B in 1925 #3972, 27-42 in 1929 #9044. So my guess would be that yours would be somewhere between 1925 and 1929, probably more likely around 1927. Of course, MTM became part of Minneapolis-Moline in 1929. I don't know how many tractors were left to be sold at that time, but I have a 1935 Frick price list which still lists the MTM 27-42 tractors and 30 & 42 hp power units. I also have a 1929 MM catalog which lists MTM Type A, B & 27-42 so there were apparently a number leftover at that time. We are also working on a MTM 30-50 which is approx. 1929 for a friend. As for the seat bracket, mine didn't have a seat but the 30-50 did. I cast one for mine assuming it was the same. I used his bracket, not a pattern, so it was a tiny bit smaller than the original. The only pictures in catalogs I have been able to find had a tool box or something in the way so you couldn't see it. It was only the cast iron bracket that holds the spring and seat and bolted to the platform. The casting wasn't cheap, I'm thinking it was almost $100. If you would want me to get one done for you, let me know. If you find a picture of one, send it to me and I'll see if it matches or I can send you a picture of this one. Hope this helps.

Robert,
Send me your e-mail and I'll send pictures. This is the cast iron piece that bolts to the platform and the seat spring bolts to it. It is 11" tall and the base is 8"x6". It has part #7174W on it, if that helps. This seat also has a spring 27.5" longx3" wide that the seat bolts onto and a reinforcing spring 17.25" longx3" wide. They go together and bolt to this cast iron piece. I don't have any extra seat springs. I've seen a lot of Minneapolis tractors without seats. I don't know if they were optional or people just took them off.

Hi Robert,

Nice big 'ole tractor you have there. Send me an email and we'll chat about it. I've got some pictures I can send you (one really nice one and a couple pictures of one that my grandpa had with me standing beside it when I was younger) and I also should be able to decode the serial number.

Regards,
Trever

I also have a 17 - 30, mine is a type B. Ser. No. 6455. I also have Lubrication Instructions for Minneapolis 17 - 30 tractors. The are 2 photographs in it, one is an overhead view of the tractor. On the overhead view, one can see the seat assembly. However, the photo is kind of dark so it is not real clear. The Lube instructions is dated April 1927. They did not come with my tractor. I would email you a copy of the photo but I do not have a scanner. My tractor does not have the original seat assembly either, but I have a friend who does about 20 miles from me. I am a farmer and am quite busy now so it will be a while before I get over there. Is yor tractor a Type A or Type B or is it a "plain plate"? I would guess your tractor to be a 1925. I also have parts tractor No. 5379, also a Type B. Not much left of it. Jim.

Robert, my grandpa had one when I was younger. I still have pictures of it, as well as another picture of someone else's 1926 17-30B. I believe the one that my grandpa had, had the original paint by the look of it. The majority of it was gray, with the wheels, and radiator red. The wheels had yellow pinstriped going up and down the spokes, and the radiator had "The Minneapolis" painted in white. Don't quote me one this if it is original or not. The other picture I have has the majority of it gray, green fenders, red wheels, and the letters painted red on the radiator. My book says they had gray engines and chassis, light gray tin work, green fenders, and red wheels.

Sometime in the future, I would like to get the tractor back. I don't remember a lot about it but I know that engine had so much of a temper when you start it, that my grandpa switched from cranking it on the crank to turning the flywheel to get it started, like a John Deere. He got hit in the leg once by the crank and he injured himself. I would like to get the majority of my grandpas tractors back, but I doubt that's possible.
