Non-detergent oil in '53 U and Farmhand loader

My dad has always used SAE 30 non-detergent in the '53 U. Also, I have also been told to use non-detergent hydrallic fluid in the 50's era loader (because of leather instead of rubber being used as seals). Now, the SAE 30 non-detergent is getting harder to get and I do not believe I have seen hydrallic fluid with the non-detergent label. What do you folks recommend, detergent or non, and can I go back to non if I use detergent in the engine? In the loader? Any brand preferences? Thank you.

What we have been using, as far as I know is non-detergent hyd oil. They use non-detergent for hyd as it does not foam like detergent oil.
Using detergent oil in an engine if it wasn't previously used will increase oil consumption.

I can always find non detergent oil at NAPA. It is their NAPA brand of oil. I have never heard of non detergent hydraulic oil, however I know an old farmer who used to buy 30 wt Chevron oil in 55 gallon barrels. That is all he ever used in his engines and hydraulic systems in his older tractors, mostly 2-cyl JD. He did use hydraulic oil in his newer tractors, however.
I recommend you keep using non-detergent in your engine and Dextron III in the hydraulic system. John

The one experience I had switching from non-detergent to detergent in an MM 445 was not a good one. The engine had plenty of sludge built up inside and the detergent oil started cleaing it away. That by it self seems like a good thing until the oil filter clogged after about five hours of run time and the oil pressure dropped to about 10 psi.

You can probably make the switch without having this problem if you can completely flush out the engine. If you are talking about a propane tractor, the problem should not exist. Propane tractors typically run much cleaner than gas or diesels.

As for the hydraulics, I have never heard of non-detergent hydralic fluid. I run Dextron III in all of my older MMs and have had no problems.
