Saw a nice R today at Portland swap. It was real nice tin, fenders and 7" lights on it, and brand new 9.5" x 36 rear tires, ran nice! Fella said if no sell this week, it goes back to MN with him to be dismantled! I asked WHY? as it was nice whole tractor. His only reason was to make more money on parts, than what he can as whole tractor. What a shame I thought. Is this the norm in this Hobbie?? I hope not. I can see tearing down an old shot or blown engine rig with bad tires and now regular good parts, but not just any tractor. It sold while I was there, I'm glad! I wanted to get it, but now $$ here to work with! I find this attitude of parting good machines as wrong! What you fellas think?

I worked at a tractor junkyard last summer The man wanted to retire. There were well over 750 tractors & a bunch of Imp's there. He took a clam shell crane & loaded everything in scrap trucks There was over 150 MM's

This very same subject started several almost religous discussions here about 5 years ago; it went on for days. My personal opinion is I like to keep them running, not parted out unless beyond reasonable repair, especially parting out a running machine for cosmetic parts.

If too many people part out too many tractors, someday there will be a supply of parts, but no tractors left to put them on. It may take a while but someday it may happen.

Well, first off, its their tractor, they can do what they want to with it.

I recall it made me sick the day my friend bought a good straight UTS so that he could have a 'wide front' to go under his UTU. I did my best to get him to fix that UTS. I ended up buying what was left of it and now I have a good UTS tractor, thanks to someone else's front axle.

Its a disappointment that some 'good runners' have given their lives to make my old junk run, but there is a demand for parts that makes an old tractor worth more as separate parts than as a whole tractor.

On the other hand, if there are fewer tractors, each complete example should be worth a little more. . . .

I agree with the seller of the R. It's the American way. One parted out tractor could provide the parts ncessary for numerous old tractors to have a new life.

I have seen a lot of good iron go to be parted out. It is kind of a shame, but I often enjoy the opportunities to buy good used parts. I have had quite a few MM and have never parted one of them out. I would rather sell in one piece.

Well, to me it is a yes and no answer. Yes it is wrong to have that kind of attitude with it but it does happen alot. People put more in them to restore them now and harder to get their money back, and find out the price of used parts and sell them that way instead. And the reason I say no is because of all of the "grandpa's tractors" out there or "I bought it from them because it was the first tractor I drove" that is in need of restoring and either the parts are bad or missing. These are the tractors with sentiment that mean more to people. They will keep them and and once restored take better care of them. Not the ones they buy from any old person that comes along. But that's my two cents.

I'm the fellow in Portland with the R. Like any investment you try for the most return on your dollar. Knocking a running tractor in the head is not something I like to do, but paying the bills and providing for the family are also rather high priorities. Every used part you buy for your pride and joy once was on a running tractor. Come to Mt. Pleasant this weekend and save another tractor from the bone pile.

Hi, I'm just glad someone bought it there that day. BUT, maybe he was just gonna part it too! I don't want to know. The thought Im thinkin' is the parts tractors are the froze up non running, rod out the side rusty, wheels gone kinda junk, not the sharp straight running ones like I thought that one was. I WANTED that tractor, but had no resource for $ that fast. I was gonna try to make a deal in mail to buy till that fella took it. He hardly even looked at it before buying! Hesitate, you lose!
