RTE wheel size / UTU timing

Im just about finished with restoring my RTE and I need some advice. As far as I know the RTE only came with 36 inch wheels. My problem is that I dont have a good set of 36 inch rims, but I have a set of painted 38 inch rims in the shed. I would like to bolt the 38's on to save me some time. Does any one know if 38's were an option for this model? and also, if not, should I put the 38's on or wait till I find 36's? \

My second question is for my father. He just put a new camshaft in his utu and is having trouble with timing it. From what he tells me he lined the on the cam gear with the dot on the crank gear. Is he missing a step? Because he buttoned it up and it missed terribly. Should the timing be advanced or retarded 7 degrees ? I read something like that on the tune up site. Any help here would be super.

Just checking on your UTU question: Did your dad check/adjust the valve lash after he got the motor back together? A new cam will cause the valve lash to change. And if the lash is wrong the motor can miss, backfire, etc. even if the timing is set right.

The cam gear has 2 marks. the "I" mark goes with the crank gear, the "o" mark goes with the water pump shaft gear so it will time for a magneto.

On the first question I would say yes put the 38's on it. MM done a lot of special opitions on their tractors so they could have put them on any way. I would email Brian Rukes on it too. He has forgot more about R model tractors than I will most likely ever know. I can send you his email address if you want. The second question did he line up the "o" mark on the cam gear with the water pump gear? There is or should two mark sto line up on the cam gear. Or at least there is on mine.

Hi there,

Yes, Kevin is right in saying it's okay to put the 38s on the tractor. After all, not only is it YOUR tractor, but it was legitimate for an RTE in that time period to have 38s. Here's a LITTLE of the history on wheels/tires on the R series:

The EARLY R series tractors used 8-36 tires almost exclusively, at least as a standard feature. 9-36s came in a bit later. But by the late 1940s, MM had dropped the small 8-36 size and was offering the row-crop Rs with 9-36s, 9-38s, 10-38s, and even 11-38s (those were strictly rice and canes, though), and even the short 10-34 rear tires.
