ZA engine noise

Looking for advice here. I have a 1951 ZAE that I overhauled. New rings, bearings, ect. A friend designed a tool for removing the ring groove in the cyl. bore. The ring grooves in the pistons were worn quite bad, so we machined out the ring grooves to install three-sixteenth inch rings. The originals were one-eighth inch thick. Now I seem to have loud engine noise. Seems to get worse as engine gets warmer. At first I thought it was tappet noise, but after ajusting them several times I don't notice much difference. Anyone have any ideas here?

check your governor. the governor shaft should have no play. If it does, the weights will hit the housing.

Probably is a wrist pin slap from worn wrist pin/upper rod to piston pin bushings GeneDavis

The fella that helped me with overhaul seemed to think the wrist pins were okay, but anyway when I tear it down I will surely check them again. Thanks Richard

If I remenber right the Z has a cast in head. Did you remove the ridge that the rings would have produced in the head? I had a knock in my U after I rebuilt it and it was end play adjustment of the cam. The U has an external adjustment and the Z may be the same. Hope that I have helped.
