Where are the best bets for locating an oil pump screen assembly (for the oil sump) and a gasket for the oil sump cover for a '53 U? The screen on my oil pump screen has pretty much fallen apart and the gasket has as well.

If I made a gasket what type of gasketing material and what type of wire mesh should I use?

Also, I am having rusting in the crankcase, and was wondering if using ethanol enhanced fuels accelerates a rusting process.

Thanks for you insights.

An engine that runs too cold can rapidly accumulate condensation in the crankcase - this of course promotes rusting. You might check for a missing or broken (stuck open) thermostat. More frequent oil changes won't hurt either!

I doubt running ethanol enhanced fuel has any effect on internal rusting, unless somehow a lot of unburned fuel gets past the rings and into the crankcase.

Welters is a good source. I also get parts from Wendell Everett 740-922-3335. Either one should have the screen. They might also have the gasket, or you can make one out of paper or use RTV.

These old engines tend to draw moisture in the crankcase when they sit for long spells. That's why they rust inside. I don't have any idea what you could do for it in the future, except to run it pretty often. If you do let it sit over the winter, crack the drain plug a few turns and see of water drips out. water in the oil might be what happened to your screen, since its about on the bottom.

Try Welters in Verona, Missouri for the parts that you need. Agco also handles some of the parts.

any kind of alcohol, ethanol, or methanol is very corrosive.....if you use any type of alcohol it can not be left in the tank, carb, or anywhere else in the motor..... it will rust!
