A few years ago my Grandfather rebuilt an old MM, the decal on the hood says it's a UB but it doesn't look anything like the UB pictures I've seen. I tried to see what the serial number plate says but it's coated with so many coats of paint I can't read it. The first 3 numbers of the serial number is 019 but can't read the rest. The family is wanting to sell this tractor but it would be nice to know what it is we're selling. Thanks for the help.

I searched my serial number list which includes engines. The only serial number I can find that starts with '019' is 283A-4 engines for tractors from 1948 thru 1953. I would assume that the serial number you are looking at is from the tag on the side of the engine. There should also be a tag on the right side of the tran/rearend case near the right brake that would have the tractor model & serial number on it.

Since U's were built during the whole period of those engine serial numbers and UB's were built during 52 & 53, it could be some type of U or a UB.
John
