Want/need a tractor

Been lurking on this site for a while and reading a few threads. I just bought 7 acres in the country and will be moving there shortly. 5 acres of it is a productive hay field. I would like to be able to plant about 4 acres of various wildlife foodplots (clover, corn, beans, wheat, rye) and maintain the property myself, harvesting is not required. To do this... I was thinking of a small tractor that would operate a brush hog, two bottom plow, disk, rake. A front bucket would be nice but not required.

Problem is I don't know jack about tractors. I am mechanically handy (autos, small engines)but never worked with hydrolics. I have a line on a 1950 Minneapolis Moline 1950 RTV. Engine was rebuilt, runs great, but needs new tires and does not have a 3 pt hitch. Asking $2400.

Would this tractor do what I want/need to do? Is this a OK tractor for a eager tractor novice? What are some good questions to ask the seller? What do I need to look at/watch out for on this tractor?

Any thoughts, comments, helpfull hints would be appreciated, Thanks.

You definently want a tractor with live pto, live hydraulics and most important for what you are going to use it for, a 3point hitch. Most readily available implements for a small tractor require a 3point hitch. An MM 335 or 445 would be good an Oliver Super 55 or 550would also be fine. An IH 504 or similarly equipted tractor would also be suitable. Don't get a Ford 8N or 9N. Dead Hydraulics and PTO are a real pain in the butt. The 8N's are popular with people who have never had the real thing and don't know any better. Because they are popular they also are way overpriced.

If you are going to use a bush hog type mower, live power would be nice or at the minimum an over-riding clutch so the mower doesn't push you when you stop. The MM 'R' is 24 HP & doesn't have live power. The hydraulics on it (assuming it has hydraulics) work a little different than most others. There is no device in the system on the tractor to hold a cylinder in position when not moving it either up or down. You can use an MM cylinder or there are ways to get around this.
$2400 sounds like a high price unless the tractor is in very good condition or has been restored. A 335, 445, would be a much better choice for doing the things you mentioned since most of them have live power take off, 3 point hitch & hydraulic outlets you could use to run a loader.
