Power steering on UBE

Did they ever have the option of power steering on a UBE 1954 M.M.? Mine has it on but not sure if it is original ,as i seem to have play in the steering wheel , i can turn the wheel 1/4 in eighter direction before it turns the wheels, is this normal? It look's like i have some worn out ball joint's ,and i was wondering if the bearing could be worn out in the gear box by the front of the tractor on the steering.

UB Specials had power steering as a factory option. The steering control valve assembly is mounted in the front pedestal and the power assist is accomplished by a rack gear with pistons on each end that is mounted ahead of the steering sector gear in the pedestal. You can see the caps for each end of the piston bore on each side if all the front sheet metal is removed.

Char-lynn (sp?) offered a power steering kit for earlier UB's. There's an installation manual for sale on Ebay right now. Their p/s motor/valve assembly installed somewhere in the steering shaft between the pedestal and where it entered the steering column.

I believe power steering was not offered until
the 1955 UB, then it was an option.
