Saw an ad for one of the beasts for under $3k with a bad motor. I know some were Cat's and some were 585 M-M's. Assuming it's a 585 how is the parts availability, and how difficult to work on? I have some level of mechanical ability but these are mighty big!

Also, what's the opinion on them? anything in specific to check?

I live at Austin Mn . A farmer down the road has a 2655 with a MACK semi motor in it. It was done many years ago, and still in service . Pulls a big DMI ripper with it. The man that did the conversion made a comment to me the when they thought they had it done , and where to "back" the new repowered beast out of the shop....it went forward. They had to do somthing to get that resolved, I forget what it was.

Wow, seems to be some questionable opinions torwards the 585 even among MM people. I do know that I would take a 504 or 800 any day over a CAT or Cummins. I do think that in this model it was only MM motors. Can't comment on the 585. I thought they were good, but maybe not. MM engines in general were superior to other fast reving designs of the time. 585 rebuild could be expensive. My opinion? Go south and buy a LP gas 800 motor for it. They were built with these and it is one of the best engines ever built and might be cheaper.

The 504 and 800 power units will not go in the A4T's. The tractors had a smaller bolt circle where they bolted in the tractors than the power units. A few HD 800's were built with the smaller bolt circle on the rear. They are hard to find. A 504 out of a 1350 or 1355 also has the small bolt circle on the rear. I agree either LP engine is a far better engine than the 585

The 1350 and 1355's didn't have the 504. THey had the 585 in them too just like the 2655. What is the problem with the 585? No power or longevity. We have two tractors with the 585 in. THe one is the 2155 Oliver (G-1350 MM) and the other is a White 2-150. I agree the internal oil pump was junk like was in the 2155. We use that one only to pull with. We have a turbo on it and a lot of fuel at about 400Hp. The other 585 we also put a turbo on. It is running about 225Hp to farm with. Runs great and have no problems or complaints. THe engine doesn't run hot at all if the radiator is kept clean. AND yes we use all 225Hp. We use it to pull our 28 foot disc and 5000 gallon manure tanker. Keep in mind that the total weight of the tractor and loaded tanker is close to 80,000 lbs. You've gotta love the torque when it starts lugging. Here in Pa. we have lots of hills and that is just about all we farm. We just overhauled it last summer and spent about $2500. We put in all new pistons, rings, rod bearings and main bearings. Yes it is a little expensive, but it is worth it.

Both the 1350 and 1355 in the LP version used the 504. You can modidy the 504 LP to 800 by changing the crank to 6" strock and intalling 800 blocks to make into an 800 or if you have one with the small bolt circle they will bolt right in/.

The A4T 1600 LP also used the 504

That is good to know. I am more familiar with the smaller engines and just getting to know some things about power units. I have a 403. I just learned some things about the regular 800 and the HD800 last night from a friend. I knew there was some bolt pattern dicrepancies, but didn't know what they were. How do some of the 800s get in these tractors? Use stock crankcases? Just curious. I know G1355 and A4T-1600 had some 800 put in them. Factory or dealer? I am a little unfamiliar with the details on the new models.

I read in the Praire Gold Rush magazine that the 800 engine were placed in there by the dealers with factory help. It was both ways. Some were with the small bolt pattern and some were with the big bolt pattern. The big bolt pattern can be redrilled to fit the small bolt pattern.

I have some friends that put an 800 in a GB. He said they used a housing from a GVI, lengthened the hood, steering, and frame. Really pretty simple. At auction here two years ago, there were two A4Ts with HD800 LP. Not only had they changed motors, but they added another fuel tank so it would make it until noon. I remember them bringing $14000 each.

I do not know how far you want to go? If you bore it out give it about .010" more because the pistons can run on the tight side when hot. It is a good project.

No Cats were ever offered in the 2655 Oliver or A4T-1600 MM.

It's the 2655 flavor. I think it's in Southern Michigan. I'd buy it to use (lightly) on my dad's 50 acres. It looked a little rough but had a cab and the tires appeared to be up. If I get a chance I'll call.

But if it's the CAT I may be forced to buy it - $2500 for a used 3208 and then I'd be in business!

Sounds like a good buy if you happen to have a good 585 sitting in a corner of your shed. A cat or cummins would be cool.

if it is a 585 you can drop 6-8 tthousand in it quick and still have a bad engine we had one in all our mm and olivers and do not want any more this is the reason these tractors with 585 are always cheap

They are expensive but what tractor isn't to work on. My brother is putting a professionally rebuilt one in his tractor for about $6500.00 with a 1000hr warranty. that is the same amount of money it costs to change a 6.2 liter chevy diesel. If you want a good warranty you will pay. Take a JD 4450 in for overhaul and see what it costs?

True, but it is an Oliver version, which could be had with 3150 (early) or 3208 (late) Cat's.

I know where there is a 2655 with the 585 and no cab!

I like the 585,but cummins would be ok, but them cat 3208 engines can be a bigger turd then the 585. most people I talk to hate them, no torque rise and lots of head problems. Local machine shop has fixed lots of cat heads.

I was an Oliver- MM dealer when the A4T's were sold and I never saw either with a Cat engine. The Oliver 2255 and later the White 4-150 did come withe Cat's. A cat may have been retro-fitted into one however
