I bought a U at a farm sale yesterday but there is something wrong with the governor. When the throttle is advanced the engine will not rev up above a fast idle. I can move the throttle linkage by hand to increase engine rpm's but it drops back to idle when I let go. There are 2 adjusting screws on the grovernor. Should I try moving them? Also, the manifold is not original. Help!

Thanks for all the responses. Here's some more information. While the engine is running I can move the linkage between the governor and the carb to increase engine rpm's and letting go it will drop back to idle. However when the engine is not running the same linkage cannot be moved. It seems to me the flyweights are inside the crankcase. Can the whole assembly be removed through the opening on the side of the crankcase and be cleaned and reinstalled easily?

Yes you can remove the whole thing from the side of the engine. And no it will not move while the engine is not running and is not suppose too either.

It could be that when they put a different manifold on it changed the height of the carb, thus throwing the governor out of adjustment. You also might try taking the cover off the governor or taking it out and see if it needs cleaned.

Make certain that the governor linkage is free from binding. Pull the throttle back to an idle, raise the governor control lever and release it. It should return to an idle without binding. If it does bind, you can correct it by either loosening the carb at the manifold and move it, or by bending the linkage.
If the linkage is free, move the throttle to the wide open position and turn out the adjusting screw on the back of the governor until the engine is running at 1400 RPMs (counter clockwise).
If adjusting the governor does not work, the governor probably needs to be rebuilt.

You might also want to check for air leaks around the carb.

There isn't a return spring on the throttle shaft to bring it back to idle is there? If there is, remove it. Might want to check the flyweights to make sure there O.K. also.

I am only familiar with propane models. On propane carburetors the arm on the throttle shaft can slip causing the problem you describe..

Go to an IT manual and it tells you how to adjust it. They are very touchy and will not run right unless they are adjusted correctly. If I remember right, the manual states something about adjusting the linkage 1/2 of the rod thickness when the throttle is held in the wide open position. You need to look at the manual as I am not certain on that unless someone else is. I have a manual, but not handy.-----deadeye
