UB Battery

I just bought a UB and got to checking it over and discovered that the battery is in backwards(Neg ground, and my other MM's have Pos ground) It charges OK but was wondering what I have to do to make it correct? Also it is supposed to have a new clutch and pressure plate but when you let the clutch pedal out it is very "jumpy". Does that mean the fly wheel is rough? Thanks Jason

Jason,

Putting your UB back to positive ground would just be a matter of political correctness, it will operate perfectly fine either way. To go back to the original positive ground do as Kevin said and just switch the battery cables at the battery and the wires on the Amp gauge. You will then need to re-polaraze it. Before starting just take a jumper wire and flash between the Bat terminal and the Gen/Arm/A terminal at the cutout/voltage regulator. As soon as you see a tiny flash it is done. DO NOT accidentally cross to the field connections. Also, the wire from the coil to the distributor should be connected at the coil to whichever terminal is the same as the ground. Hope this helps.

You can also just reverse the two cables. But if you do this you will also have to reverse the two wires on the ampmeter gauge so when the engine is running it does not show a discharge instead of a charge. I made all my tractors polarity the same so in case of jump starting you don't cross the cables. As far as the clutch goes it may still need to be adjusted.

Jason, your battery may be hooked up correctly. Moline used a positive ground hookup on all of their 6 volt systems. I believe that the 12 volt systems were all negative ground. Moline made the change from 6 to 12 volts in 1953 and your UB should be 12 volt, negative ground.
