Friend of mine has what is supposed to be a RT-I over near lake of the ozarks in Missouri. I've seen some bad photos of it and cannot make out what it is. I'm going to take some vacation days and go and spend 3 or 4 days with him to set his timing and see if we can get it to start as easy as my ZA. He sent me a letter with a detailed description of the plate on the side of the transmission and on the side of the engine. The plate on the side of the trans. says

minneapolis moline
model - RT-I
Serial No. 413778H

the plate on the side of the engine reads

Minneapolis Moline
Model No-EE
Serial No. 413839

My closest guess is that it is a 1946 model and was used at one of the local airports. any help would be appreicated Walt

Walt,
From the serial numbers your friend has a 1946 RTI with a 1945 EE engine. The engine is a late 1945 and the tractor is an early 1946 so its probably still the original engine. It should have a magneto. Part way through 1946 the RTI was switched over to distributor ignition starting with serial 415256. The "H" at the end of the tractor serial number is usually a good indication of an industrial Moline. I haven't seen an "H" on any serial numbers other than industrial models. If you're not familiar with the RTI. It has a foot clutch, foot accelerator, fixed axle spacing with 24" rear rims and cast centers and an I beam type front axle.

I also have a RTI that has an H at the end of the serial #. Does this have some special meaning? The tractor had some extra iron on the sides of the motor. My guess is that it was a frame for a forklift or something of the sort. Thanks Mike

Mike,
My experience has been that the "H" in the serial number of Moline Industrial models was nothing special. I think they just used an "H" instead of an "I" so people wouldn't get the "I" confused with the number "1". I've also seen an "S" in some standard tractor serial numbers. I'm not sure if the same applies for "U" and "N" serial numbers. The extra frame was probably from a loader. Lull loaders were popular attachments for RTIs. I've got 2 myself.
