I've recently had some repair work done to a model TO35 gas tractor. My mechanic has done $1800 worth of work on the tractor's motor along with other misc. work. In addition, he has told me that the engine will not hold pressure so he feels sure the engine block must be cracked.

He has given me 2 options, he keeps the tractor and we call it even or he finds another engine block and charges me an additional $1300 for the work for a total of $3100.

I was wondering what my best option would be? Is a Massey-Ferguson engine block difficult to find? I was curious what the approximate salvage price of the tractor would be? Should he have known the engine block was cracked before doing the work?

Sounds like the guy is trying to give you the shaft. I dunno how anybody could run up $1800 worth of work and then discover that the block was cracked and not fix it for that. Sounds like you need a lawyer.

I dunno what used Z134 blocks go for but it can't be that much. It could be the one that you have could be repaired. There are engine shops around that do that sort of thing routinely.

Just wanted to let you know that I appreciate your comments and suggestions. To make a long story short I spoke to the mechanic about the engine block. At the advice of another mechanic, he decided to break the engine down at which time he found and blew out a small piece of metal out of the oil journal, which allowed the oil pressure to come back to normal. There was no cracked block after all.

I own a 2135 with the Continental 4 Cyl. I just recently had the engine completely rebuilt. It was cracked between all 4 cyls. A local machine shop rebuilt it and repaired the block. It has seen some heavy running and has not given any problems. This tractor has an industrial loader which I have not reinstalled yet. All other parts, labor and machine shop ran about $2200. That included radiator rebuild and a new 2 stage clutch and pressure plate. i think that you need to look closely at your shop lists and talk very seriously to your mechanic. Something is very wrong here. My bills were more than I intended to put into the tractor, but I have a good running tractor now.

What is the difference between the "Z" engines and the "F" engines. I have a Continental F140A engine. I know where there is a TO 30 with a bad engine. Would my F140A fit in there?

YOUR TO35 HAS A CONTINENTAL ENGINE.CRACKED BLOCKS ARE A VARY COMMON PROBLEM.NORMALY YOU FIND THE CRACKS BETWEEN CYCLINDERS.I HAVE HAD THE BLOCKS REPARIED.I WOULD TRY TO FIND A USED ENGINE OR BLOCK.IF I WAS DOING THIS JOB THE FIRST THING I WOULD HAVE DONE WAS HAVE THE BLOCK CHECKED BEFORE I CONTINUED WITH THE OVERHAUL.A COMPLETE ENGINE OVERHAUL ON THIS TRACTOR SHOULD NOT TAKE MUCH MORE THEN 22 HOURS LABOR.YOU CAN BY A ENGINE KIT IS ABOUT $500. GOOD LUCK LANCE

I've twice had auto engines rebuilt with cracked blocks. Both times the mechanic let me know the problem before he got started. Both times I was able to have the block welded - successfully. The first was on a '65 Chevy truck six cylinder. The truck is still putting around town - albeit owned by someone else. Your mechanic isn't much good or else a con-man, or he would have caught and fixed the problem before now: or at lease given you the options.

You gotta be kidding!

Any mechanic worth his salt would know that before engaging in "hours" of work.

I'd have him put it back together "as brought in" and pay his "posted shop minimum".

The whole tractor is not worth the $3K.

Some recourse action available may be 1. if he's also a "licensed" auto mechanic (state license posted), file a complaint with DMV 2. inquire at your state's Attorney General's office.

Best of Luck.
