I had to change a bearing for the clutchmecanism on my MF35. To do this I had to disconect some of the fuel lines, and now it wont't start..

It is a 3 syl Perkins diesel, and I (belive) I have gotten all of the air out of the system. I have never done this before, so maybe there is a special trick needed to do this propperly??

A friend insisted that I should open the dieselpump, so we removed the "lid" (where the trottle is connected) on top of the pump, and the "lid" at the back of the pump (where the fuel lines leave the pump)...

Have I damaged the pump by doing this??

I really hope someone can help me, I miss driving my little red friend!!

Thanks!

I have found that if the fuel filter are clogging up it take a lot longer to pump the fuel by hand through the systems.

As Chip said don't take the injector pump apart but if you have got the rod back in the fork in the top of the injector cover you should be okay. As for starting if your tractor is not equipped with multi-power I would suggest that you loosen the line at one injecter and pull start the tractor until it starts and stop and tighten the line. This reduces any chance of starter damage. For some reason different engines are harder to bleed the air out than others. We have 5 Masseys with Perkins engines and part of them are easy to bleed and crank while a couple of the others are hard. Chip give you an excellent procedure to bleed the system so if you follow this and pull start the tractor you should be okay. If you do not have another tractor a pickup will do just fine if you put the tractor in high gear and pull it at 10-12 miles per hour. Also when bleeding the system make sure the lift pump is actually pumping by feeling to see if you have pressure on the pump lever if you do not rotate the engine about 180 degrees and it should go to pumping.

You should not be opening the fuel injection pump, my perkins can be a little difficult to bleed out, start at the primary fuel filter, open the vent and pump the lift pump until you get fuel without air bubbles, close the vent. Then open vent on the secondary filter, and do the same thing. Now move over to the injection pump, you will find a high vent that should look like a small bolt with a jam nut under it, loosen this and pump the lift pump until you get air free fuel, then tighten. Now loosen the high pressure fuel connection at the number one (front) fuel injector, push in the fuel rod, and crank until you get fuel there. Now tighten the high pressure line, and crank it again, it should start, it might be a little rough at first, but the other injectors will purge themselves readily. Be patient, sometimes it seems like forever when you're pumping that lift pump. (Of course if the lift pump isn't working, you're going to have a bit of a problem with this)

Good luck
Chip

Check the fuel lines on the secondary fuel filter. As the fuel leaves the secondary filter it enters the injection pump at the rear of the pump. You should notice an arrow on the secondary fuel that indicates that fuel leaves the filter at that opening and travels to the injection pump. The front of the injection pump (drive end) will have a line that returns fuel to the secondary fuel filter. An arrow on the filter indicates fuel entering the filter. I have notice over the years that the lines are very easy to get crossed when a tractor is spilt. This will cause the vane transfer pump inside of the injection pump to not get fuel and also will cause air to be trapped in the injection pump. The return line carries away any air trapped in the pump housing and if it happens to be switched with the inlet line will cause starting problems. Also this return line carries heat (heated fuel) away from the injection pump and is very important. Good luck!

You sir are a GENIOUS ! thank you for making your post. i bought home a 1964 35 deluxe 3 days ago, and for three days have been trying everything to get it to fire. i was told the last time it ran was 2 years ago, they shut it down and it would never start afterwards.

After seeing your post i checked the fuel lines and sure enough they were crossed, within 10 minutes i had it running..

A question, anyone know how to set those springs in the injectors ?

Thanks again
Charlie
