My MF dealer says the valves on my old 1956 MHF 50 (that's right, Massey Harris Ferguson) need adjusting. Besides taking of the fuel tank and valve cover, what's my next step? Should I try it or leave it up to my dealer?

We too have a MHF 50 with the Cont Z134 engine.

It's been a while since I adjusted the valves, and I should do it again. But you're right, pull off the hood and the gas tank and valve cover and have at it.

I believe the books say you should rig a small auxillary gas tank and do it with the engine idling.

I just did it by first warming the engine, shutting it down and taking all the stuff off. Then I bumped the engine over with the starter as needed to set the valves. Take the distributor rotor out or something so she don't fire. Call me morally lax, but it seemed to work fine. And it also struck me as a bit safer to do it that way.

my rule of thumb, for me too, is " if i ask myself can i or should i, i better not attempt it.
i am a service tech for a honda atv dealer and have seen many instances of someone "just trying it myself" and making it worse, sometimes much worse
