previous owner replaced alternator with a one wire variety. He just lopped off the extra wires. Obviously its not charging. Anyone have any ideas on how to correctly wire this alternator into the existing harness?

Hello Jack -

The one-wire connection should go to one side of the ammeter. Size 12 or 14 wire, to carry the current.

The other side of the ammeter should have a wire running down to the heavy battery connection on the starter solenoid. There will be other wires on the ammeter, but this arrangement will allow the ammeter to read charge current from the alt.

Ypur existing harness should have a heavy wire in it running to the ammeter - you may be able to find it, check it out, and make up the connection.
It will have 12 volts on it at all times; if you can't find it, run a new one up.

Once wired up, you should have 12 v on the alt term, and when fired up (and possibly revved up to 1500 or so to kick the alt into charge, may require even more RPMS if it has the 4" - 5" dia drive pulley) it should charge, and there should be a strong magnetic field on the rear bearing cap on the alt. It will snap a wrench or screwdriver tight against the rear case. (Watch the hot terminal!)

Hope this helps.
