While bush hogging, I hit a low stump which was unseen until after the fact. When hit, it stopped the engine dead in it's tracks. (Diesel)
Prior to this, I had no problem starting tracter, but the battery may be weak. After hitting stump, Had to jump start with unusual long "recharge" waits. When started, it was making a knocking sound and smoke was coming out of oil dip stick port and a hole in the front timing gear cover, so I turned off and towed out of field to driveway.

Any thoughts as to what may be wrong? I'm new to tractors and thought if I knew the possibilites that I may locate a service provider without too much of a goose chase.

Thanks.

Similar thing happened to me,are you ready for this? BENT CRANKSHAFT!The sudden stop my have bent a pushrod or broke a connecting rod.First thing I would do is drain the crankcase oil into aclean container and examine it parts and or particals, probably shouldn't run it until you "go-over" the motor.Always use shear pins in your couplings, never bolts or other things.Good Luck,I hope it's not too serious.

Been there, done that :-( "Normally" I would expect damage to occur in the PTO drivetrain instead of the engine. Were you running the RPMs at the 540 PTO speed(around 1650 RPM)? What gear and range(High or Low) were you in? As I remember, the 150 has live power so the PTO clutch "should" have taken the brunt of the damage. Obvious, but you did disengage the PTO prior to starting? The knocking sound "could" be something broke in the piston/rod/crank area, not good news. For what it's worth, a Massey with a Bush Hog(brand)will usually EAT anything you can knock down. Hope there's minimum damage!

I was runing at the 540rpm mark on the tack., at first gear on Low. Yes, I disengaged the PTO prior to restarting, and when it started, the hydrolics seem to work to lift the bush hog (the hydrolics seem to be connected to the clutch). Unfortunately, it does seem to fit that it's something major in the engine.

Is it better to look for a working engine or repair?

Larry may have nailed it, internal engine damage. Unless you want to tear into it yourself you may be better off having someone with Massey experience look at it. Haven't priced a rebuilt short block lately, compare with an "overhaul" kit knowing you may need a crank. Hope it works out.

my theory on rebuild or used You are allready replacing a used part . If yours broke it must be a weak link IN your case it was just bad luck so you can go both avenues But if rebuild you know what you have Just my thoughts

Ouch! Doesn't the bush hog have a shear pin?
