Dear Lorna,
I am uncertain what you may mean by the starter cylinder. If you give me more info on your tractor maybe I can help out a little. There should be a serial number plate just to the left of the steering wheel with three letters followed by six numbers. The middle of the three letters should be either "G" for gas or "D" for diesel. That will tell you which fuel that tractor requires. It just dawned on me that maybe you are talking about the fuel chamber that is used for cold starting the tractors that have the early Standard Diesel engine. If this is the case, The chamber is self filling by fuel from the engine fuel pump through the secondary fuel filter. This starting system is not a great design and even when working properly helps only slightly when starting a cold engine. Even in temperatures of 40F (5C) this engine can be a difficult starter. Many of these systems have been disabled and lines removed and capped. If the tractor is in good shape and the system works as originally installed I have heard of some people that have had good results. Other than the starting characteristics, the tractor makes a very good small farm utility tractor. I hope that this is of help. Let me know if you have other questions. This web site is a wealth of information and some very knowledgeable people are happy to help. Bob
