I just looked at a 1978 MF40 TLB that was traded in to a local (Phoenix,Az) dealer. They cleaned and painted it. It seems to work OK. They want $10500.00 for it.I have never owned or operated a backhoe. I am an automotive mech. What do I look for on a real check out? What are the weak and strong points of this tractor. The backhoe portion is removible and leaves a very heavy duty 3 point system for a gannon or?.I wanted to buy a Case 580 but all the 580s in the $10,000 range are much rougher than I prefer. Thanks in advance for your time in answering my questions. Dave Roberson

The case 580 wears out too fast it would be smarter if you plan to use a backhoe any amount to look for a Ford, if you plan to play with it in your yard then the MF would be the way to go

I bought a MF-40 with a MF34 loader and extra heavy duty box scraper for $5,000 that is in very good shape. I do not know exactly what the backhoe attachment would add to the price of the tractor, but smaller, light duty new backhoes go for around $6,000. The MF-40 tractor came with MF52 backhoes that are heavy duty. I would think that you could get a used backhoe for around 3-4 thousand. That would put the tractor around 7-10 thousand depending on condition. I have been looking for a good backhoe for my tractor and have not found any MF-52 units around. I have not found any negatives about the MF-40. It is powerful and the perkins diesel is very fuel efficient. I am very happy with mine.
