Which lube to use?

Hi folks,

I just had my 1954 TO 30 delivered to me on Sunday. I'm new to farm
tractors and have some questions. First off what weight oil to you
recommend should go into the Continental Z-129 crankcase? Second question,
the rear axle has a lube dip stick, what type of lube goes in here? The
tractor also has an over/under drive (total of 12 speeds forward). Do the
rear end, transmission and U/O use a common lube sump? I have a front-end
loader with front of engine mounted hydraulic pump. The F-E loader doesn't
use hydraulic fluid from the sump reservoir. Loader has down pressure and
bucket piston (both nice features). What is a good source(s) for service
and/or operators manual(s)? How about sources for common items, like oil
and air filters?

Thanks for your help on these (I hope) simple questions. I know I'll have
more as I get to use this great tractor.

Regards,

Fran Marchand

Hi there,

I shall not say what oil you shall use on the engine, as it is a Continental engine.

But on the diff., transmission, and hydraulics which use the same oil you can use a common SAE 15W-40 engine oil.
The best thing with this is that you have an engine oil, typical 15W-40 in the summertime, and you use the same thing on the rear end.
You can always use a grade 80 to 90 gear oil on the diff., trans. and hydraulics, but it is handy to have only one oil. If you choose to use a gear oil you must never put on an EP or hypoid oil. NEVER !!!

Note!!! There are 3 holes to drain oil from under the tractor, front is under the transmission, middle under the hydraulic pump cover (aluminum) and the last and sometimes the most hidden under the differential. If you have a hitch you may need to lower it t see the drain plug.

I really searched a while before I found this last one. Almost given up.... when I discovered it on the film I have where they assemble the tractor and I noticed the hole.

Happy hours with your new tractor.

Bill
