I'm considerng buying a 1973 MF 175 diesel. I would appreciate any comments on this model, pros & cons, weak points, what to look for. Also what is the hp rating? I don't know if it has one; but if so, what about the multipower transmission, how does it work, what should I look for or should I steer clear of it? Thanks for any help.

In my opinion, the 175 is the best tractor in the 60hp range for the money. I prefer the 8 speed over the multi-power. It is a good all-around tractor. David

GAF, I have a 180 that is virtually the same thing as your 175 and have found this to be a great tractor. When I bought mine the MP did not work, I believe it was stuck in high, anyway last winter I split the tractor to do some pump work and got the MP working very easily. Done the whole job by myself in about a day. I use mine to run a 9' sickle and a 4' x 5' round baler and have not had much trouble. Johnny in TX

A 175 is 63hp, great fuel economy, good power. Multipower is the weak point. We used to plow 300 acres with 4btm plow, disc with a 12ft disc and plant with 4rw planter for several years before getting a bigger tractor. Overall a very good tractor. Put a clutch and some other small repairs, never touched the engine, has I'll guess 10,000hrs on it. Ours has a straigh 8spd. trans.

Is the multi-power similiar to the TA on an IH? Is there any way to test the multi-power for damage or pending trouble down the road? Thanks again for the info.

Pull the tractor up a grade in high multipower then push the clutch in. It should not drift back. I think when they go bad they run in the low side and will not shift up. I have had an 1130 and a 1150 and had no problem with MP.
