How much has anybody sunk into one of these tractors to have it looking and running good again.Mine has a couple of small dings in sheet metal but mainly needs a rebuild and a steam clean, wiring, guages, and new seat. Are most parts still available ?

Do not do it because you want to make money. Do it because you want to. I worked on this one hit or miss for 22 months to get it to this point. I have done some touch up since then and have been using it around the house. There is still more to do. Always is...

BTW, the engine kit comes with pop up pistons that take the compression ratio from 7.1:1 to 9.1:1 It sounds completely different. Hitch her up, take up the slack, listen to the governor pick up, watch the tires bulge, and pull mountains down. It is quite impressive.

How do you know what the compression will be with the kit ? Is it say in the paperwork that comes with it ???

I am excited about the comp increase.I figure I would just clean it real good,do the engine kit and valve job, rewire, cheap paint and put her back to work. What do you think the comp increase did for amt of power increase ?

I have no idea. It was in such bad shape when I bought it that there is no way to really tell. It had all the top rings broke, the valve springs were mush and the valves clicked. Bottom end was sound even with factory mains. It was hard to hear anything over the valve noise. All is cured now.

If you are using an IT manual, reverse the way they tell you to put the rocker shaft back in. They have it upside down. No oil ever gets to the rockers. I can validate this if need be.

Sounds like you have a good plan. Just prepare for the price to be around double your best guess...

I guess I should not have said "restore".I will be using it as needed for plowing, mowing, etc. All engine work-rebuild to bring compression back up,Hydralics-to keep them from drifting down, lights that are broken, new seat, steam clean and a Rustoleum paint job.Is red Rustoleum close to Massey red ? I use to beable to pull a 3 bottom plow but not now with the low compression.Like I said even with $3k invested I would not beable to replace its power and the engine will be good for some time.

You know many people call a dupont overhaul a restoration.A COMPLETE restoration is going to cost a few thousand to do it right. There needs to be a guide for what folks call "restoration" Good luck with what ever you do.

I should also mention the hidden costs of keeping your wife happy during this process. This can translate into new kitchen appliances and living room furniture.

You're looking at about $4000 to go from one picture to the other. Probably never get my money out of her but really don't care. I could have spent a lot more one some boring cruise ship last winter.

Forgot to ask if you have a friend down at the bank. $$$$$$$$$$
These jobs can run into the thousands.
Most of the time you will have way more into the tractor than what you could sell it for.

I expect to spend in the area of about $2500.00 In 25 yrs I have only put a water pump and a recored radiator and that was only because I had it out. This tractor owes me nothing and to replace its reliable and simple power would cost me many thousands more.So i figure with a complete rebuild it will last another 30 yrs.I am capable of doing the work just do not know how to go about it especially the sleeves and valve work.

The valve work is a real precision job.
I always leave that to the folks at the machine shop.
I take my heads to a engine machine shop and have them do the valves, seats, new springs, guides and surface machining.

Get a service manual from Agco-Massey. I have been through exactly what you are about to undertake. Do not get an imitation service manual, the one from Massey will easily walk a novice through the overhaul.

I think your estimate on cost may be a little low but not alot. The result will be well worth the effort and money spent.

This is a real good book to read before you start.
You can buy a used copy for around $7.00 on Amazon.
