Hi folks. I'm new to the country life and have myself a Massey Ferguson 255, which I like on account of my great-great-aunt married into the Massey family so I feel related to my tractor.

Anyway, when I check the dipstick for the trans-hydraulic fluid it shows low, so I want to add more fluid. I tried removing the bolt (?) where I was shown to add more fluid but the fluid that's in there came gushing out so I don't know what to do.

I read elsewhere in the forums about people draining the fluid and changing the filters but that's beyond me. I just want to get my fluid level back up again for now.

There are some leaky gaskets around the hydraulic system as well so I need to get it all looked at. However, can I just add some fluid in the meantime?

thanks much!

Ken

I just bought a 165 two weeks ago and just made the same mistake about three days ago. The plug which I took out was more directly below the seat and compared to my other old Case tractor, I thought this plug was the one I needed,However the same thing happened as you described. So if the 255 is set up the same way as the 165 make sure you are taking the plug out which is right next to the shifting lever--it is a big old plug, but has a hex head shape on top (I felt pretty dumb after learning of my mistake). I do not know yet what the other plug does? Still would like to know.

Hi Ken, Try removing the transmission filler plug located to the left of the main gear-shift lever. If your tractor has a platform cab fitted, you may find the plug underneath a separate blanking plug on the floor of the cab. The size of the plug should be around 1-1/8" A.F.

regards, Evan.
