I have a MF 40 Massey Ferguson three cylinder gas and under the seat on the transmission there is a pie shaped thing and you can check the transmission and rear end oil with a small dip stick. Just above the dip stick there is a leaver that has three positions. I dont know what it dose, nothing seams to move when I move it . Can any one tell me what it will do?

Hello Duane,
What you are refering to sounds to be the RESPONSE QUADRANT. This is a sheet metal plate and should be marked 'fast' and 'slow'. The transmission oil dipstick fits in a cut-out in the plate.
Adjustment of the lever alters the speed at which the three-point linkage drops. In the 'slow' position, a light implement may not fall at all and have to be moved towards the 'fast' position a little to select the suitable drop speed.
The RESPONSE unit is self priming so ensure that the oil level is correct. They do fail so if you have no drop speed adjustment this may be the case.
Are you also referring to the isolating valve which is mounted on top of the hydraulic cover?
If so this valve enables you to switch between the internal hydraulics for the 3-pt linkage and the external that would be used to tip a trailer for example. There are many types available and yours might have several ports to operate a loader and rear trailer pipe for example.
Cheers
