we have a massey 65 diesel that has a problem with the starter and im not sure what the deal is. one time it will work fine then the next all it seems to want to do is smoke and not work. does anyone know what could be wrong with it? ive never had one of these starters apart so im not sure. its even more inconvienient because for some odd reason i cant seem to tow start it for the transmission will not turn the motor over. my grandpa said that the pto has to be engaged and that still doesnt do it. is there a reason for that? it has gained the name in my family of massey fuckerson... (affectionately called)

Ricky, A little info for what it's worth. Just had the starter for my 65 diesel completely rebuilt by a local starter/generator shop, complete with new bendix and solenoid. Cost me $100.

Good Luck,
Dan

Check for fuel leaks from the fuel pump mounted above the starter.(the old MF65's were real bad to leak fuel on the starter) I have seen folks spend a lot of money to repair or replace the starter but fail to fix the fuel leaks that caused the problem to start with. The fuel dripping from the fuel pump can saturate the inside of a starter causing premature failure.

There are several makes of starters and electrical systems fitted to older MF tractors.
Lucas are generally fitted in the UK, Paris-Rhone and Ducellier in Europe. I believe that AC was mainly fitted in North America.
As a general answer to your question as far as 'sometimes it does, sometimes it does not'.
Quite often it is due to a dirty or worn armature.
If the starter stops in a 'good' place place, it will start next time. If it stops in a 'bad' place it won't. It could have a lot of dust or even water in it.
If you have an electrical repair shop in your area it would be best to ask them to test and repair it.
As to not being able to start it, it sounds like you have a tractor with Multi-Power transmission.
The engine needs to be running to generate oil pressure to give drive. Engaging the PTO will make no difference.

Hello again,
There are a number of reasons why the MP High will not work.
First check that the linkage down to the point where it enters the top of the transmission is free and working smoothly. If that is OK and your oil level is OK then it gets a bit more serious.
A common problem with earlier MP tractors was the cracking/breakage of an internal pipe between the MP pump and clutch pack.
It is also possible that the plates in the MP clutch pack are seized or worn out. Rectification can be expensive with a lot of labour involved.
Cheers

yes the linkages all work and move freely.ive noticed that when i try to put it in high it leaks oil out of this strange looking plug in the bottom of the transmission just about perfectly in line with where the linkage connects into the top of the transmission... would that be the internally broken pipe you mentioned? im not that worried about it because i havent had to use it and ive been running it since i was six and that was eleven years ago so i can live without it if it isnt going to cause me any severe problems.
