I have a Massy Fergenson Model 50A tractor Back Hoe recently with hydrostatic steering. Recently the steering has become real loose when you drive down the road it wanders and when you go to pick up a load you have to turn the wheel almost a ful turn before the steering picksup.
When it does pickup i have plenty of power to turn the wheels. I am no mechanic but does anyone have any idea what the problem might be or where to start looking?

A lot of possibillities, but first check your p.s.fluid to make sure it is not foaming up and check to make sure you dont have any p.s. fluid leaking from any of the hoses or the p.s. cylinders etc. Then check the ball joints at each end of the two p.s. cylinders for loose motion, and also the tierod ends at the top of each spindle. If you dont have a lot of loose motion in those parts the next thing would be to check the p.s. cylinders to make sure fluid is not bypassing in them. After that the only two things left are the valve under the steering wheel and the divider valve up front(this valve gives very little trouble) where the lines turn to go down towards the cylinders.

Just a couple of questions - does the steering turn to the left or the right by itself, unable to neutralize? And what type of steering ram is fitted to the tractor, a single or double rams. I have only seen the MF 50's with power assisted steering in Australia, but have had a bit to do with hydrostatic steering on other models. Maybe I can help. regards, Evan.

The steering does not neutalize and it seems to wander in either direction. I am going to try the reccommendation from retired dealer in the order he suggest but if you have any other ideas i would sure appricate them. I am not a mechnic but if i could isolate the problem then get a mechanic it would probably save me a bunch of $$$
