Hi Guys,

I am posting this question for a neighbor. He bought a 1963 MF 203 (IND), model that is well used. The front bucket and the power steering work off of a hydraulic pump driven by the crankshaft and mounted in front of the grill/radiator area. He has very little pressure, and as a result the bucket will not lift, and after the diesel shop checked his pump pressure, the power steering does not work either.

1. Is he looking at rebuilding this pump first or are there other things to check before going into the pump?

2. If he has to rebuild are these pumps straight forward, or involved to rebuild?

3. Is he better to find a rebuilt pump or rebuild the one he has? He is looking for the most cost effective approach.

Thanks in advance for your input, information and advise.

Dean

My 205's hydraulic pump started to leak bad last year. Pump was just worn, shafts and seals. Parts were not available. Found a brand new pump with the same dimensions on eBay for short money. everything works fine now, Good Luck

what was the shop's verdict on the pump pressure? Make sure the fluid is clean, free of water, and at the correct level. I believe there's a half moon key linking the drive shaft to the pump. Mine disintegrated and it stopped turning, might check if your's is even turning. My 202 has a filter up front, close to the pump. Think the filter is still available at MF, possibly even Napa. If all that doesn't work, I'd take it to a reputable shop for rebuild. Are you sure this pump also drives the PS? Mine has a gear driven PS pump up by the timing cover. Follow your lines back from the PS cylinders and I think you'll find a pint-sized reservoir and a separate PS pump. My manuals indicate there were a number of different PS and hydraulic pumps used over the production run of these tractors. Don't know which you have, but I haven't been able to find a rebuild kit or a used pump to replace my weak PS pump. New is available, for about $500.
