I recently purchase a MF 165, the hydraulics were working fine, then I went to lift a backhoe with the 3 point hitch, it would not lift and then the rest of the hydraulics quite. I opened valve lines with no pressure. Then I took the top case of and checked for broken parts, none found. I started the tractor, to see if pump was pumping and it did sputter some oil considering it had low fluid at this point. The multipower did not work when purchased. Any advise would be helpful, thanks.

Bob and David,

Thanks for the advice; I initially checked the oil level and it was ok(right after the hydraulic loss). I will proceed to check MP linkeage, filter and pump flow. Thanks!

The 3ph works off from the main pump and the Multi-Power works off from the auxillary pump. There are several different remote hydraulic arrangements. Some use pressure from one pump, and some use the other. Does this tractor have the 2-stage clutch or independent pto, and does the pto still work?

Yes it does have a two stage clutch and the PTO still works.

Hello Dennis,
If the PTO appears to be working OK then it is unlikely to be a clutch problem. Failure of both pumps is unlikely. The problem may be a blocked filter. This would account for both pumps apparently failing. If the oil level was low then you will only get a mixture of air and oil coming through. As Bob has mentioned, there are several different types of set up depending on what equipment you have. As the tractor os not an IPTO model you should be able to remove and clean the filter OK. Have you checked the movement of the Multi-Power linkage? Make sure that the rod which goes into the top of the clutch housing has a movement of about 5/8" between MP high and low.
Fit the bottom bolt into the side of the casing and replace oil up to this level. Restart the tractor. At idle you will only see a small 'fountain'. Open the engine up very slowly and the 'fountain' should increase significantly.
Cheers

DavidP,

I have to tell you cheers, I replace the side pins in the pump tonight and added oil. Increased the RPM's along with actuating the pump and there was alot of flow; Yea! I am planning to replace filter and oil, along with top cover and valve and check operation. Thanks!

Well I checked the MP linkeage it seams to be 1-1.5" inches of travel. I removed the filter and checked for blockeage, only to find that 1/2 the filter was gone. My estimation it has been that way for awhile, though with the fine mesh I would think this could block the pump and or valves. Would you suggest replacing the pumps at this point? It looks like the PTO shaft needs to be removed and tractor split to get out the pump and auxilary pump.
