Massey 30 missing under load

Today I decided to haul a couple of loads of moist topsoil in my spreader 2 1/2 miles home on the highway for a small landscaping job. I ran in fifth gear with about 2 yards of topsoil each time, a fairly heavy load for the spreader.

On the first run the vital signs were fine, but by the end of the second run the Massey was missing quite badly.

It's a 12v conversion, as was the engine on my boat, and when I ran it too hard one time to make a lock, I burned the plugs.

Does that sound logical, or is there something else I should check first? It starts and idles well, but it has a big gap at the high end now.

Lots of potential possibilities for your problem. Do you have a FAT BLUISH-WHITE SPARK? Is the timing correct and the advance working properly? Is the mixture correctly set or is it too lean? Do you have the correct heat range plugs? Are the plugs fouling? If so, what type of fouling? Is the coolant level correct and the temperature in the correct range?

When I fired it up this morning it was fine. That makes me think it must be a heat-related problem. I replaced the coil last year, but can"t remember why. It received plugs and points at the time, but I didn"t bother with the condenser because it looked new and the motor ran perfectly with the new coil.

Right now I"m suspecting the old wires, particularly the one that seems to rub against the base of the distributor, but I haven"t had the gumption to take the hood off and check. It idles perfectly while cold, in any case.

It could be either or a combination of both. I would set the timing and when you know that is correct and still have the problem then go to the carburetor.

I would guess it't the carburetor but do the timing first.

Ya know what it turned out to be?

One plug wire had vibrated off, the one touching the grease cap for the distributor.

Well, it was hot in there, and kinda dark, so I didn't find it until I took the cover off.

I guess I'm way quicker with a keyboard than a wrench.

It gave me a fresh appreciation of how nicely the old 162 idles, anyway.
