I have a 1959 MF-50 that will backfire if dwell is not right-the timing and point gap will be right but if dwell is not advanced it will backfire to the point of blowing a hole in the muffler so will my 1970 Ford F350

Check your timing and the advance mechanism.

A lean carb will backfire through the intake but its never consistant. You would lose power under load. Engine timing will cause backfire depending on how far off it is. Dirty points and worn parts can do the same. My bet is on the ignition being off time or worn parts.
