Switching my 33 over to 12 volt, went and got a rist. to step it down but someone told me I need to put on a 12 v. coil. Is this correct? I thought the reason for the rist. was to step it down for the points. However if I change the gen. to 12v should I need the rist? Would this not be a 12v sys? or am I missing something? Thanks.

Typically, a 12 volt coil system actually runs at about 9 volts, due to the resistor, so the points live longer. The 3 extra volts seems to be okay for 6 volt coils.

I changed my 30 over to 12 volts and used the original coil with no problem.

You can get a 12 volt coil with a built in 3 ohm resistor at most auto part stores. Or call John Brillman at The Brillman Company.
He has them in stock.

Ask John to send you one of his catalogs.
You need the resistor to keep the points from seeing 12 volts. I always use the coil with the built in one.

Just wanted to let you know if you call John about buying a coil he is always happy to answer any electrical question.
I buy all my tractor electrical products from him. His catalog is loaded with stuff.

You should get a 12v coil. With a negative ground system the negative pole of the coil will go to the distributor. With a postive ground system the positive pole of the coil should go to the distributor. Make sure this is correct or you will burn up points.
