Hello all; a guy brought me a MF-20 tractor with a clutch problem. you have to stand up to push it down, its that stiff! he just bought the machine, & says that was the reason guy was selling. main & pto clutch both work perfect--just so hard to push. I have already checked release bearing/collar/yoke for binding--its going to be a split to find problem--my questions: I remember shims being used between p/plate & flywheel on other masseys. does 20 use also? possible wrong pressure plate?

Sounds like someone has used a press. plate assy for a 165 or 175 in it. The 165 press. plate would be pretty stiff and the one for the 175 is almost impossible to depress on a MF 35,135,2135 or MF20.I have seen this happen quite a few times in the last 35 years. (The shim you are refering to is an air ring,approx.030 thick and is used on all MF tractors with the 11" dual stage clutch.)

Maybe before you split it, remove the cover plate underneath, and have a look in the clutch housing, and see how many springs are fitted to the clutch, and the color of them. If the M.F.20 has the pedal directly clamped to the clutch release shaft, it should have only 6 Red springs fitted, (later rationised color), or 12 yellow springs, (earlier lighter clamping pressure springs). Let me know what you have. regards, Evan.

hello, masseynut[australla] Thank you for the reply. yes, my clutch pedal hooks up directly to shaft--I pulled cover plate today--pressure plate has 12 springs, I don't see a color. the shim I was thinking about was there-- a thin piece between flywheel/p/p. this thing looks real fresh--i'll roll it around again tomorrow with better light, may find color-code on spring--I sure bet its wrong application. cannot split for a few days anyway. dieselpaul
