I have a 230 with a leaking axle seal which has oiled the brakes shoes leaving no brakes. Can someone tell me if the seal can be changed without going into the rear end. Also I have about a quarter inch of end play in the axle. Is this normal, if not how is it corrected? Any help would be appreciated, thanks Kenny.

Hi kenny, The M.F. 230 axle end-float should be between .002 to .004 thou. If you have a quarter of an inch, either one of the axle bearing lock collars has loosened and slipped, or one of the axle bearings has collapsed completely. The inner axle seal can be replaced by removind the 12 retaining bolts that hold the axle bearing carrier onto the trumpet, (or axle) housing. If oil has come out the outer seal, you will need to replace both the inner and outer seals, not forgetting to pack the axle bearing with grease before assembling. hope this helps, Evan.

Thanks for the help Evan. I'll take it apart today and see what I find on the bearing and check both seals. Thanks again Kenny.
