My rotary headlight switch has one of its terminals broken at the rear, my question is how do you remove the knob (without breaking it)

If it's like the knob on our 165 and 285, there is just a set screw in it, ussually hidden on the bottom side of the knob so you don't see it and it doesn't fill up with water.

I think it takes a small flat head screw driver

Is it possible that different switches/knobs were fitted in North America. All UK and European 100 Series had the push button type.

It's very possible. I just figured I'd throw in my $.02 also because I know that you're across the pond, and I've just never seen one like you describe.

How's this for a quick reply!!!
If the knob is complete there should be a pointer on the lower face of it. Opposite this pointer but nearer the dome is a small hole. You will need a drill bit or similar to fit the hole. Further in you will find another hole. Insert the drill into this and push. There is a spring loaded pin in the spindle of the switch which needs to be pushed to release the knob. They do sieze so you may need to apply some spray.
