I'm not a good mechanic, especially when it comes to electrical, so here goes; our 1966 Massey-Ferguson tractor w/ 4-banger Continental only fires on 2 cylinders. No amount of switching plugs, plug wires, and buying a new distributor cap had any effect--it only fires on cylinders #3 & 4, with a random spark on first turnover on #1 & 2. Next step is a new rotor, points, etc., but if that doesn't do it I fear it may require pulling the distributor, and I don't like tearing things apart that have to go back together "just so."

Many thanks in advance,

----Tom "righty-tighty,lefty loosey" Hall

i agree with gerald on his points . if i was working on this i would check my connections and change the points and condensor . i would also run a compression test on all four cylinders . including valve adjustment . a bad cap and wires can have the same effect / problems. it would be hard to believe that this problem would start all at once with distributer bushing. good luck

Could be the shaft bushing in the distributor is worn allow for a changing point gap as the shaft rotates. Can't stand more than about .010 of bearing slop.

My MF-135 got to running on two cylinders and I found it was an exhaust valve adjustment had worked loose so that valve wasn't opening. Then when the intake valve on that cylinder opened the combustion pressure ran back in to the intake manifold and kept the adjacent cylinder from getting fuel to fire.

A bad condenser did that bad running once too. Be sure the centrifugal advance isn't stuck. Needs a bit of lubrication occasionally.
