Need a little help. So i am trying to diagnose a hitch problem that i have had since buying the tractor. It is very slow to lift, a little jerky, and the pump is somewhat noisy (you can hear it rattling in there), obviously this gets much worse the hotter the oil gets. It also drifts down in about 2 minutes with a very heavily built 6 foot bushhog.

Since it has been not right, and since oil prices are so high i wanted to wait to change the oil till i knew that it was right, knowing that if the oil wasn"t the problem i would lose 8 gallons of oil. I thought the oil look decent.

Well i pulled the stack tube, o-rings are fine. And this afternoon i pulled the response cover (the right side) off to look for welling. The oil looks awful when you can see it better, slightly emulsified, greyish, generally nasty, and seemingly very thin, but with the tractor running and lifting the hitch, not the slightest bit of welling from anywhere and none seemingly coming down from the cylinder.

My local tractor experts, are leaning on the blow off being faulty or open a little but i would think that would lead to some welling.

My question is? Is it possible that old nasty seemingly very thin oil would cause slow lifting slightly jerky noisy pump? I guess that it could but looking for a second opinion?

Also what oil does the tranny/hydro take? My manual says m-1129a, but not sure if that is just tractor tran?

Thank you so much in advance.

Check your hydraulic oil strainer as it will become quite dirty after time buy a new one if plugged up (you can also clean the old one with solvent and air)

Hi, I don't remember as much as I knew about the
mechanics, but, If your pump is knocking you must
adjust your quadrant levers slightly forward. When
you address that the knocking will stop. This and
the idea of blowing the relief valve(blow off)will overheat the oil making it thinner. Tho it
may be time to change the oil, I doubt that this
is your problem. Do you have an auxillary valve?
on top of the housing connected to that standpipe
and if so could be issues with that. Does your 40
have the instant reverse transmission? With that
the pump is only engaged when the forward or rev.
pedal is pushed. The 40 should have replaceable
piston rings on the 4 pump pistons that could be
worn or broken.Normally-yes-as the Massey guys
said, The relief valve as I call it is the first
thing usually looked at. Is your intake screen on
the pump poss plugged? It is washable. It is down
below the oil level and you may not have seen it.
