Write an EXACT list of everything you want done, and everything you want replaced. Include brand of overhaul kit. Specify how block is to be cleaned (inside and outside). How about oil pump, water pump, belts, hoses? Clutch work? Radiator work? Starter? Alternator? Will engine be primed and repainted? You can go from 1000 to 5000, but the point is KNOW what he is going to do, and get receipts to back it up. Give him a copy of the list ahead of time and agree on it. Tom

REBUILD, is a big word. Does the rebuild included, regrinding the crank, reconditioning the rods, new pistons, sleeves, new valves, guides, springs and retainers, mill the head, all new gaskets and seals? what about the injectors and pump? Belts, hoses, clean and flush the radiator, new thermostat? This is the way we do them. You could be getting a bargan or an azz burning. You decide.

Well Mr Pornstar, my mf65 gas rebuild kit cost $869 + shipping $45, block and head machine work cost $550, water pump another $50. Total, $1514 plus shipping

Now your engine kit is going to be around $450 so you are looking at $1095 for a comprehensive rebuild. He is getting $900 dollars for all the correct fitment, responsibility and frustration.

I had my tractor back together and realized that the throwout bearing was laying on the workbench. I wanted to douse myself with honey and roll around on a fire ant hill.

2 large does not seem like that much.

Have him check the clutch while he is in there....

Aaron

Hi,
Agreed with aaron and everyone else. In the UK that would be around 1000. To do the FULL job properly that would barely cover a 3 cylinder engine. Unless your man is prepared to show receipts for everything, be very careful.

I agree with these guys. Rebuild means different things to different people. Most resellers consider a rebuild to mean new pistons and sleeves and some easy off oven cleaner to clean the outside up real good. I would sure discuss the particulars of the rebuild before I took it in so there won't be any disappointments later. One man's like new is another man's barely hanging on but still functional. The sky is the limit on these old tractors and $2,000 for a total engine rebuild sounds a little low to me.
