I broke a lift arm on a MF 135.

I was going to replace both as they are somewhat worn. Then I found out they were $100 + each.

It broke where the leveling rod bolts to it. The break did not look like normal mild steel to me. Can these be welded back to hold?

Thanks, Greg

It's forged steel and can be welded. I had to extend my lift arms to clear the cab and cut the arms with a torch and welded a short piece of flat bar in. I V'd out both sides and welded it up with 7018 for 100% penetration. I actually had one break, about 15 years later but only because it got caught on the pull type disc I was using when I turned a sharp corner. My neighbor, at the time, is also a welder and took it over to his welding truck and welded it back up with 7018 again. No problems. The ball ends are actually welded on if you look close. A little stronger rod than 7018 or an xx18 with extra alloys for toughness wouldn't hurt. I wouldn't use MIG for a repair like that. Weld the hole right up and re drill it after welding. Aftermarket lift arms aren't real expensive either, so you have another option. Dave

I just bought two lift arms for my MF 20 which is the industrial version of the 135. The cost from the Massey dealer was 52.00 dollars each.the p/n's are: 510 584 v92 and 584 585 v92. Hope this helps

BTDT before on my ford. Yes they can be welded but you need to know what your doing to do so and you need to use Ni-rod or one like it to do a good job. Last time I welded up one was 10 plus years ago and it is still holding and I over work it at times

I know they can be welded, but I believe it takes a professional welder to repair the arm so it will stay together and be safe.

This is one of the most used parts of the tractor, I would go ahead and replace it with a new one for safety purposes. The ends were worn on my lift arms from many years of use, had my boys plowing, did not want one breaking out under load. Could cause plow to turn, twist over on them or cause some other type problem that could hurt them or myself, when I knew the parts were weak. I replace both arms at same time.

If the welded arm breaks under load, you could pop one of the bolts out of the transmission housing that the arms attach to under the tractor.

Then $100 bucks would look like chicken feed.

Just my 2 cents!

Be safe!

Hi Greg
Yes the can be welded.
You should use a good quality cast iron rod.
We use a product made by Eutectic (spelling may not be correct.)
You do not have to preheat or anything with this product.I have used it lots, never had a failure.
Make sure everything is aligned and clean, grove it out as much as is safe to do. Bolt it together similar to being in place before welding.
DO NOT COOL! In fact cover it and let it cool down slowly if you can.
Good luck
Brian

I believe I will opt for replacing them. I do have a friend that is a pro welder who would weld these for a beer or two.

Both arms have been bent out some since I have owned the tractor and when the one broke it bent more- app. 3" on either end of the break`. So I think the steel will probably have cracks in this area.

Thank you all for the replies.

Greg
