First off .. thanks fot a great site.. I have learned and saved a lot from these discussions.

Having said that.. gotta do rings.. the manual says to drain the cooling system also.. to pull the sump/oil cover.. ??

I have a front end loader and see that there are two LARGE bolts going into the thick re-inforced front part of the pan. Can the pan be removed without removing the whole front axle support - or can I just prop up the stuff around it and remove the two LARGE bolts during this ??

steven, the 23c diesel is an english standard engine, similar to the engines fitted to the old black taxi cabs. parts are getting scarcer and very expensive down under. the 3 cylinder perkins is a much more popular choice, very cheap to repair, very easy starting engine and easy to get parts. cheers for now. sibby.

Thanks for your replies. Ater pulling the head off , it turns out the head gasket is shot .. it's leaking back & forth between two cylinders (no wonder it won't start). Someone at Massey's design area needs a good SMACK for putting the cylinders so close together that there is only 5/16 of an inch or gasket material...DOH.

the pan can be removed without taking the loader off . but i would suggest no encourage you to remove it . oil sump is in the bottom of engine an will be in the way if you remove the rods . good luck
