With Chuck's help I now have a water pump gasket. I got everything out of the way of the water pump and put my socket on one of the water pump bolts and it seems stuck to me. Now, since I'm older and wiser I didn't give it the ol' "heave ho" for fear of breaking the bolt off. I quickly retreated and will wait until Fall to go at them again. I can only assume that broken bolts in this area mean days or weeks of downtime trying to remove the offending stubs. If they will ever come out at all. Is this a common problem with these engines or am just being a scaredy cat? Does any one have any words of wisdom on the best way to get them out?

agree to try the torch heating method. Could also try PB Blaster when it cools down. I had same problem recently with my 165D with the lower right bolt located behind pulley. Not sure if your G176 is same as my 165D 203, but you probably have water pump mounted on aluminum gear drive cover. So, be careful with heating bolt and also to not over-torque and strip threads when retightening bolts. I bought a couple new grade 8 bolts as the old ones were rusty. You must match exact bolt lengths. Should be 3/8" fine threads.

If ya have a torch put a little heat to it so it doesn't break. I hate water pump bolts. Been rebuilding pumps for almost 16 years now and go though rusty bolts on a daily basis. I usually put a little heat to them and let it cool a bit and turn little by little back and forth until it works its way out. Don't get in a big hurry and be patient.
Good luck Kevin
