Just getting my 135 out for the season and noticed the batt. is not charging. The meter does show a dip in voltage when cranking, so I"m guessing everything is hooked up right. Can"t find any loose wires.

The alternator is a 3 wire set up and I can measure 25 some odd volts coming out of it. Don"t really know how to test the regulator. All the other guages seem to work ok. Batt. is only showing 12.6, shouldn"t it be 14.8 or so when running?

I whacked on the voltage regulator a bit. Used to have an old Ford LTD that responded well to whacking every once in a while when the idiot light came on.

Yes, a voltmeter should show around 14 volts "to the battery" while running. A 3 wire alternator does indeed mean an external regulator as is obvious because you know to hit yours every once in a while. But what do they run from NAPA, about $25 ? Here is what I would do, because NAPA also tests alternators for FREE. Have them test your alternator output and go ahead and pickup a new regulator. Is there a 12 volt resistor wired up by the coil in your system too? I would imagine, get a new one of those too.

If you have 25V at the alternator something is wrong. The battery is fully charged @ 12.6 volts with the engine off and you should have about 1 volt (depends on the VR temperature) above that with the engine running( about 4 amps draw for the ignition) and the initial charging after starting complete(after about 15 minutes of running).
Are you using an analog VOM or a digital VOM? Some digital meter"s don"t give accurate readings around machinery and I think that"s caused by RF interference. I use an analog VOM on my TO-30 for just that reason.

I was using one of these little cheap digital meters. I'll dig out my old analog one and see what it says.
