My boyfriend and I are wanting to restore his 135 -- the previous owner let it hit a tree and it messed up the front end pretty badly. I've been on this site and researched serial numbers and all that to try and identify what year the thing is so we can order parts for it. However....I can find no number anywhere on the tractor that comes close to matching any of the serial numbers supposedly for the 135. We took a picture of it to a local tractor dealer the other day and he said he thought it might be an English 135. How do you identify an English from an American? Are the English serial numbers different from American? All the places we've been told to look for serial numbers have nothing there...I don't know where else to look and I don't know what else to try. Does anyone have any suggestions? If it would help, I could try to post a picture, although I'm not very technologically savvy. Any thoughts and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Coventry built 135s have the 135 badge towards the front of the bonnet, U.S 135s have it at the rear near the battery. Serial number is on the bottom part of the dash on a riveted on plate. Lay on the floor in front of the tractor, with your head nearest to the tractor, drag yourself under the front of the tractor to the point where the engine bolts to the front frame, look up at the underside of the engine oil sump, right at the front of it, and you will see the date that the sump was cast, day/month/year. The engine would have been built shortly after this date.

All the MF-135 serial numbers I have data on begin either with 641 or 9A. Any other numbers are casting numbers.

If its gas and Continental, its 1968 or earlier. If Perkins gas its later.

The SN tag on my '68 is about right knee high on the dash below the steering wheel. There were also SN stamps on the engine and the rear axle assembly. But I don't know of any by year tabulation of those.

Those are US model serial numbers. UK serial numbers are just numbers. Plate also has patent numbers on it. My UK plate is by the left knee on the lower dash. Dave

Thanks for the comments and help. I forgot to mention in my earlier post that this tractor has a 3cyl Perkins Diesel engine. Don"t know if that makes a difference or not. I don"t recall seeing any plates where you all describe, but I will be checking the thing over again.

Since they used the same Perkins diesel (AD152) for all US diesel production (at least according to my US parts book) it gives no hint of vintage. There were slight changes in the rear axle and several transmission options, all without much change with time.

I'd appreciate some info. on this too. We have a 1965 135 that was purchased in 1966 from a neighbor and I use it for tending tobacco, corn and vegetables so I'm not looking for the S/N for collector purposes, but I can't find one anywhere. I've seen them on other ones opposite the multi-power lever on the dash, but ours doesn't have a plate or the holes for one. There is also no change in the paint in that area and I know it has never been repainted. I've looked all over the tractor and I haven't seen a plate in another location. The people that know more than me can help about the English vs. American versions, but I think that the "135" emblem is at the front of the tractor on the English versions and at the back of the hood on the American ones.

Serial number should be on the lower dash panel. If it's 3 cylinder (Perkins) it might have the casting date on the bottom of the oil pan near the front. UK model does have the 135 emblem at the front of the hood. If you find the number on the dash, post it and someone will be able to tell the year of it. M-P was optional so may be provision for it on the dash. UK models have Lucas electrics as well. Dave

To add a few more things to the pot from this side of the pond.
Early 136's up to late 1968 had a swept front axle, later ones had the straight one.
As has been said, the '135' medallion is at the front sides of the bonnet (hood)
Nearly all UK 135's had headlamps in the grille. North American ones have them on the mudguards (fenders). European flat-tops or shell type were fitted. The serial number plate was moved from knee level to the upper part of the instrument panel in late '68. You may have very small holes there if the plate is not.
The cross-plate that holds the handbrake was reduced to a two hole mounting from the original three in around 1968.
Red wheel centres (inside silver) were phased out in early 1967. DavidP, South Wales

Thanks again for more comments and help. I'm just wondering, if I can figure out how to post a picture of the tractor, would it help you guys out any? I have to admit, I found a picture in the tractor photos that looked very similar, a '71 model. But I'm thinking this weekend I'll try to post a picture of it and see what responses you all come up with from that.
