I recently did a complete rebuild on my Massey with a continental Z 134. When the engine runs, I have no visible sign of oil getting to the head, Is this normal? I pulled the rocker arm assembly, removed the spark plugs and cranked the motor over a good two minutes until the oil pressure gauge showed 50 Pounds; still no oil comes from the small hole on top of the head.
I also checked the pin in the rocker arm to make sure it was not sheared, causing miss alignment of the oil port. Does cranking the engine create enough oil pressure to go to the top of the motor?
I don't think you can install the head gasket upside down, possibly covering the oil passage.
Would appreciate any input. Got a lot of time in this tractor and would like to do it right. Don Ungerland

On my G176, the oil comes up the rocker shaft hold down assembly. Could there be a problem here? Did ya crank it with the rocker shaft unbolted? I do not think you can do to much damage cranking it over, especially if you use as much assembly lube as I do. That stuff is still coming out in the oil.

Did you prime the oil pump?

Whenever I do a rebuild, I always pack the oil pump with vaseline to be sure it develops a suction when the motor is turned over. If the pump turns off the distributor tang, you might get away with chucking up a long screwdriver without the handle in a big drill and turning the pump with it until you get oil pressure.

If its not that bearing, it could be a camshaft bearing installed wrong, or simply a plugged passage. My Z-145 has had that problem and it was not good for the rocker arm bushings. I made up a plate that I could bolt down in place of the rear rocker arm post with a hole and a schrader valve so I could put penetrating oil down the oil passage and then apply lots of air pressure to open the passage. Eventually I got it open and I did get oil to the head while cranking (with plugs out and no rocker assembly, it didn't crank too hard).

I knew I was getting somewhere when the air applied at the head started showing up on the oil pressure gauge.

i had to run my to-35 once with valve cover off while i was adjusting the valves.

had oil everywhere, so i believe you have something stopped up.

Thanks, I believe that my main rear bearing went in upside down. The only difference between the two halves is the one has holes threw the channel to push the oil up. Looks like Ive got my work ahead of me. Hope that I did not damage anything else. D. Ungerland
