new to this forum, a ford tractor owner. have a chance to buy a massey ferguson sickle mower. i found the data plate and where the model number should be there is not a number. where the serial number goes there are two sets of numbers, i assume the first ones are the model number. if so then it is model 238, serial number is 033888. the sickle mower is in a pile of junk and has been for about 30 years. any information on this sickle mower or where to look for info would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Is this cycle mower going to be used or is it for show?

You can get by with a junk disc, cultivator, etc:

But let me tell you, as a owner and user of a MF #32 cycle mower that dad bought new.

Nothing is much more aggravating than a worn out cycle mower and the art of setting the mower blades is a lost art.

I would try to buy the best mower I could in excellect condition if you are going to use it to cut heavy hay.

If you are only going to paint it up and attach it to the tractor for show then you can buy an old one.

Also they are very expensive to work on as you have to buy guards blades and all cutter parts must be in excellent conditon or the thing will hangup all the time.

You can cut weeds and small bushes around a pond with an old one, they are good for that.

Just my two cents!! From someone that has spent many hours using one.

also note: for some reason bumble bees like to chase tractors with cycle mowers attached.

tried out the sickle mower today, did not cut with it. just attached it and ran it for a minute or two to see. did not bind up or hang. planned on using it for around ponds and such. under some trees where i can't get in. guy will take $100.00 for it so i think i will seal the deal in the am on saturday. appreciate the input fellas, and i will keep an eye out for those bees.
thanks

never used any massey equipment, but have found out that the sickle mower serial number is 238 033888. the model number should be 31, 32, 41, or 42. it is not on the plate, i checked it with a magnifying glass. how do i determine the model # ?
please keep in mind that when it comes to sickle mowers i got not a clue what is what, so if you have any help to offer you will have to be very specific and use great detail.
thanks once again

I thnik a sycle mower can be very handy at times. You can reach out and cut around the edges of ponds, streams, and under trees where you can't get with a brush hog.

As Fred said, they can be expensive to repair. I wouldn't buy it unless you just want it for show.

Around here they rarely get used. They can be had for scrap prices just to get them out of the shed.
